The Church Now
The United Reformed Church now includes the Re-formed Association of Churches of Christ and has members in England, Wales and Scotland. As the name suggests its roots go back to the Reformation. While it seeks to be true to its tradition, however, it also seeks not to be bound by it. A cherished motto is ‘semper reformanda’, ‘always reforming’.
It works alongside other Churches in the Council of Churches in Britain and Northern Ireland, the ‘Churches Together’ groupings, the World Council of Churches, the World Reformed Alliance, the Council for World Mission, the Free Church Council and other similar bodies.
Its Churches are grouped in Area Coordination teams, & the ACT’s into Synods of which there are thirteen. There is a general assembly every two years attended by representatives of the ACT’s.
Sandwich is in the Sandwich & Thanet Cluster and in the East Kent Area Synod - part of the Southern Synod. A Moderator serves the Synod and its office is at East Croydon United Reformed Church.
According to the latest figures there are 1,739 churches of which over 400 are in partnership with churches of other denominations, mainly Methodists, Anglican and Baptist.
